My theme for the Blogging from A to Z April Challenge is – Places I Have Been. After some contemplation I decided to limit it to Places I Have been in the UK, this is because I have been to far more places in the UK and have very limited experience of places outside of the UK. I hope you enjoy my post.

Yorkshire

I have not had the opportunity to visit the City of York, but I have been to Yorkshire and quite a few places around the county. One of my favourite places to visit for the day was Whitby. It was very busy, but there was a lot to see. Including Whitby Abbey, which towers over the town. Whitby Abbey is notorious due to it being mentioned in Bram Stokers Dracula. Dracula turned himself into a dog and bounded up the 199 steps up to the Abbey. I recommend visiting the Abbey it is a beautiful structure despite it being mainly ruins. It also provides you with some stunning views of Whitby below.

Besides the Abbey there are various references to Dracula around the town, if you are interested in vampires. There are also some lovely Jewellery shops selling items inlaid with Whitby Jet, which is a black precious stone. There is also a museum about Captain Cook, and a Whale Bone Arch.

If you take a walk down to the harbour, you can see the fisherman come back with their catches for the day. Lots of fresh seafood for sale. There are also boat tours and you can also book to go sea fishing with an experienced fisherman, if you enjoy that sort of thing. Now I am not a big fan of eating fish, so I admit I did not try any of fish in Whitby, but my family did and they were very impressed. I did however, eat some chips (not with fish) from the famous Magpie Café, which were very nice.

Another place I enjoyed visiting while I was in Yorkshire, was Goathland. If you were around in the UK during the 1990’s then you might remember a TV show called, Heartbeat. It was set in a fictional town, called Aidensfield but it was all filmed in Goathland. If you were a fan of the show like I was then you can see the garage where David worked and the Aidensfield Arms, etc… it is a trip down memory lane for fans of the 1960’s set drama. There was also a spinoff called the Royal and some of that was filmed in Whitby.

If you are interested in filming locations then the Goathland Railway station featured in the Harry Potters movies as Hogsmede and the Hogwarts Express, I believe still visits the station.

There are lots of things to see and do in Yorkshire, in fact I have barely touched the surface.

Thank you for reading x
