My theme for the Blogging from A to Z April Challenge is – Places I Have Been. After some contemplation I decided to limit it to Places I Have been in the UK, this is because I have been to far more places in the UK and have very limited experience of places outside of the UK. I hope you enjoy my post.

Gorge

Cheddar Gorge

Cheddar Gorge is an outstanding place of natural beauty located in Sommerset and it has to be one of my favourite places in the UK. It is truly breath taking. The Gorge is located by the town of Cheddar, hence the name, and is about 3 miles long. I have used photo’s from Google Search for this post as my photo’s do not do the place justice.

Besides the spectacular beauty of the Gorge on the outside, the Gorge is also home to the Cheddar Show Caves, which are (I am running out of words for breath taking) magnificent. Honestly, I remember being completely blown away by them on my visit. It is interesting that the oldest human skeleton to be found in the UK was discovered in these caves, I believe it was dated to be about 9000 years old. The other fact I found interesting when I visited, was that there were people living in the caves into the 1970’s. Having spent some time in those caves, they are quite chilly, so it must have been very cold in the winter.

The largest cave is Goughs Cave and it is like entering a cathedral, it is huge. There is also a cave there called Wooky Hole, which I just love the name of.

If you are active and adventurous there are loads of activities to do there, including climbing Jacobs Ladder. This is a series of steps which I only recommend climbing if your knees are up to it, as it is hard work, but the view from the top is worth the climb. If you are not very adventurous then close by is a cheese factory. Guess what cheese they make there??? Cheddar of course. Also, don’t forget to buy your Sommerset Cider, to go with it.

Thank you for reading.

  4. I visited England most recently in 2019 and we went to Cheddar Gorge. It was certainly difficut to do the place justice with my own photos and I think the first photo you chose is terrific.
