My theme for the Blogging from A to Z April Challenge is – Places I Have Been. After some contemplation I decided to limit it to Places I Have been in the UK, this is because I have been to far more places in the UK and have very limited experience of places outside of the UK. I hope you enjoy my post.

MUSEUMS

There is nothing better than spending a few hours in a museum and there are plenty of them scattered around the UK to take advantage of. One of the other things I like about museums, is that they are often free, unless there is a special exhibition. This is great when you travel on a budget like me and you can give a donation instead on an admission fee.

London is full of museums. Some big, some small. I have not had opportunity to visit them all and I still have a lot I want to see, such as the Natural History Museum. One of the museums I have visited on a number of occasions, is The British Museum.

The British Museum

One of the reasons I love The British Museum, is obviously the exhibits. They have items on display from Egypt, Africa, China, the Roman Empire to name a few. There are more than 60 galleries to explore, which is why I have been there a few times, too much to see in one day. My favourite exhibits are the ancient ones, such as Egypt, Assyria, Greece, etc… Even though I have been three or four times, I have never taken any photos. I didn’t realise until today. I am not sure if that is because photography is not allowed or not. I will have to visit again to check.

Interesting fact The British Museum has been used in a number of movies, both inside and outside. The Mummy Returns, Night in the Museum: Secret of the Tomb and most recently Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness have all used the museum as a backdrop.

Local Museums

We also have some great museums that are quite local to us, so involve less travelling. Just before the Pandemic, myself and my daughter visited the Richard III exhibit in Leicester. In Coventry there is the Herbert Museum and Art Gallery. They now have the dinosaur on display that was at the Natural History Museum, so I am planning to go and see that soon. In a town, called Nuneaton, there is a local museum and art gallery. I have been to see a few travelling exhibitions there, including the costumes from Downton Abbey.

This is one of the outfits Maggie Smith wore in her role as the Dowager Countess.

There are so many great museums, I just haven’t go time to mention them all.

Thank you for reading x

  1. You reminded me of our flying visit to the British Museum. We arrived just before closing so ran to see the Elgin Marbles and the Rosetta Stone. My husband said they were the most important things to see. To this day I don’t know if he was right.
