My theme for the Blogging from A to Z April Challenge is – Places I Have Been. After some contemplation I decided to limit it to Places I Have been in the UK, this is because I have been to far more places in the UK and have very limited experience of places outside of the UK. I hope you enjoy my post.

Stratford-Upon-Avon

Birth place of ‘the Bard’, Stratford-Upon-Avon, attracts visitors from all over the world. As it is not far from where I live, I have been here a number of times and have visited a majority of the attractions. In fact, one of the only things I have never done is go and see a play at the RSC Theatre. I have been inside the theatre for other reasons but have never had the chance to see a play there yet. It is something I am planning on doing.

There are lots of things to see and do around Stratford-Upon-Avon, a lot of these things are connected to William Shakespeare. If you have opportunity to have a wander around the town centre, then you will notice a lot of shop names, restaurants and public houses, have used titles and characters from Shakespeare’s plays as inspiration. In fact there are nod’s to Shakespeare everywhere around the town.

Shakespeare’s birth place

One of the places in the town centre, is Shakespeare’s birth place, which is now a museum. There is a cost to go around the museum but it is worth taking a look, if you have an interest in the Bard. If you don’t want to go around the museum you can still visit the shop which has some nice trinkets in.

One of my favourite shops in Stratford and I feel like it has been there forever, is a shop that sells teddy bears. You will know you are at the right place when you see this guy standing outside. He is looking a bit worn now, but I like to pay the shop a visit whenever I am there.

Just on the outskirts of the town are Mary Arden’s Farm and Anne Hathaway’s House. Both are worth the visit if you have the time. The farm is great for children and when I last went, I was able to join in the falconry show and was able to hold and fly a falcon.

Thank you for reading x

  1. Have you read Hamnet by Maggie O’Farrell? It gives such a great description of what it must have been like in S on A in Shakespeare’s time. When I visited S on A in 2004 I was really sick with strep throat so didn’t go into the museum. We lived in Chasetown at the time. Do you know it?

    1. Yes I have read Hamnet and I really enjoyed it. I am not familiar with Chasetown. I think I might have been to Chasewater when I was younger, but it has been a long time. I will have to put it on my list to visit at some point. x
